Not to rain on the space marine parade, but mature gamers are still waiting for a title that seamlessly merges adult themes and complex characters with the rock ‘em, sock ‘em action of a Hollywood blockbuster, a feat that Remedy Entertainment claims to have achieved in their upcoming psychological thriller Alan Wake.
The Stephen King-inspired Xbox 360 exclusive, from the Finnish developers behind the Max Payne series, promises to be the next best thing to a well-crafted television thriller according to product marketing manager Laura Disney.
“Alan Wake will blur the lines between video gaming and television, and play on the strengths of both to create something truly compelling,” she said. “The storyline will run as a driving factor throughout the game, creating an atmosphere that captivates the player in a way that many straight-out horror games do not.”
Personally, screen after screen of Mr. Wake crashing through the woods with a flashlight isn’t quite ratcheting up the tension like a good episode of Lost or Twin Peaks, but I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. At least until Heavy Rain comes out and I forget all about this Alan whatshisname.
